I celebrate from far as I lit a diya to add on to the light that radiates from the grand celebration of Durga Puja from the land of oldest civilization on earth; the land I claim as inspiration of salvation for my soul.
INDIA, the civilizational land to which I belong, has been celebrating one of the biggest festivals of the year, DURGA PUJA!
Durga’s legend centres around combating demonic forces that threaten peace, prosperity, and dharma, representing the power of good over evil. Liberation of the oppressed by unleashing her divine power is the centre of faith during the auspicious 10 days of celebrations. The motherly Goddess riding a tiger or lion holding weapons in ten hands slaying the Mahishasura is the theme of popular idols. This is a very refined philosophy propelled through the mythological aspect of Sanatan Dharma. Here, women are considered as Devi, the ultimate and divine form that mankind worships with gaiety and love. Centuries after centuries! 🪔

Apart from the alluring anecdote of the Devi’s protective power and the sacred messages that unfold, what strikes me is the gorgeous celebration across India and Bengal! This is the most liberal art form of celebration one may experience! Creativity unleashed; No strict rules about how Durga would appear, its colours, themes, the materials to be used or the ambience around her! The beauty of a woman, affection of a mother, righteousness of divinity, majesty of a queen, power of a brave warrior and the divinity of a Devi comes alive in the multi-manifestation of Durga! Ten days of celebration unveils the efforts of years of hard work of the artists! Every pandal is a visual treat. No repetition, no imitating, no monotony, just a relentless flow of creative energy! While perfect vedic rituals are observed by the vedic experts, the celebration reveals deep messages through eco-friendly structures, social messages, communal harmony, dance, music and overall love towards humanity! 🪔
The Vedic rituals, pandals, idols, lighting arrangements, fasting, prasad, colours, dresses, culinary, sweets, laughters, dance & music, inclusion, greetings, creativities, art, architecture, paintings, exhibitions, decorations, designs and many many more in its surreal forms mesmerises me like never before! The spirit of the intense expression of the divine worship is bountiful in itself. Not to mention the huge economic opportunities it creates from tourism to production. 🪔
DHARMA & THE WOMEN
According to Hindu philosophy, each woman in our lives is a part of Durga. The care & protectiveness of a real woman is nothing but the presence of Durga in our lives. A society can be understood well by the stature it bestows on its women. A thorough research shows how women in Sanatan society have been regarded as philosophers, reformers, educationists, thinkers, writers, fighters and professionals all through the early dawn of civilization till this hour. If there has to be a faith for the entire mankind, nothing is comparable to the humane & deep ethos of this beautiful Dharma. Entire community bowing down to Goddess is a sight that no abrahamic religion can offer where all prophets are men waking up to dreams and illusions proclaiming themselves as God or God’s men.🪔
